It was the morning after I led the very first session of Become His Hands & Feet in the Workplace at my church, and I was doing my least favorite kind of work: copying my resume, section by section, into yet another job site. Then my phone buzzed with a text I was not expecting, about a job posting I had almost forgotten I sent.
Where am I?
Some context first. Become His Hands & Feet in the Workplace is a pilot program I built to bridge Sunday morning to the work week, pairing years of coaching and mentoring with Christ’s teachings. I am proud of it. I know the content is strong, and I am finding out in real time just how much it applies, especially in this day and age. Now that the coaching content is finally out of my head and in the room, I am switching gears to finding my next consulting engagement.
Here is the honest part. I was displaced in early 2025, and I never really went looking for my next role. Every contract I have had since leaving my last large corporate position came through word of mouth and my network. I have said it before and I will say it again: I have an amazing network of people, and I still lean on them to keep me going and believing in myself. For that, I am grateful.
So that morning, the groundwork was done. My resume was updated, my personal LinkedIn profile felt solid, and I had even set up a business page for WeStart Together. What was left was the tedious part: putting the same content into Indeed, Dice, and ZipRecruiter, one field at a time. Looking for work is not my favorite thing to do. The one piece of it I truly enjoy is the networking, and I have a little habit that goes with it. When I come across a posting and think, “so-and-so should really apply for this,” I use it as an excuse to reach out, let that person know I am thinking about them, and send it along.
That is exactly what the text I received that morning was about. Back in June, when I was poking around LinkedIn just to learn how job searching works now, I sent a handful of postings to friends. One of them landed. My colleague and friend got the job, and I was over the moon.
What do I bring?
I am a firm believer in scattering a lot of seeds, just about everywhere in my life. Many of them I never see again. Some sprout months later, and sometimes they sprout in someone else’s garden.
Of course, I picked up the phone and called right away, and I could not get the smile off my face. What I brought into the rest of that day was not a strategy or a new tactic. It was proof. Proof that all this searching, posting, and reaching out can and will lead to good companies and great people finding each other. That is what I needed in that moment to keep going.
How do I move forward?
Yes, this was not my call, and it was not my next opportunity. But I have full faith that when the timing is right, my day will come too. Until then, I am putting my head down to climb this hill. I expect it to be challenging, and in my experience, the challenging climbs are often the ones with the most rewarding views.
My small next step is a simple one: I am going to keep paying it forward. Every posting I scroll past is a chance to think of someone else, so I will keep sending them along, and I will keep cheering loudly when my friends and colleagues land their next gig too.
If you are sitting in this same middle, searching and waiting and refreshing your inbox, I see you. It can feel lonely in here, even when you know you are not alone. We truly are in this together.
A question for you
When a win lands for someone else while you are still climbing, how do you hold the joy and the waiting at the same time?
Come sit with me in the space between. Loose Ends lands every Wednesday. Real talk from the unfinished, one honest moment at a time.
